Live at the Harlow Square
(Claire Gordon, 1993)
Knowing this would be the group’s final show, and encouraged by legendary promoter Anthony Chapman, we decided to play every song that the tunings of the guitars we had brought with us would allow. This results in some chaotic moments where one or more of the people on stage isn’t entirely sure what’s going to happen next, or what’s happening now for that matter, but it’s kind of sweet. It has been known for people to comment unfavourably upon Jane’s habit of acting out the words to the songs via the medium of mime. But I could watch her “chasing the reptiles out” gesture during Half Angel on repeat, for ever. Go now, reptiles. Shoo.
Notable for the inclusion of a bunch of post-Belinda Backwards songs which never made it to a record and which surely count among our best work, and for the sporting of a range of outfits so wrong they could stop a charging Meat Loaf in his tracks. Sound and picture quality are excellent.
